For the fourth straight year, Pattonville High School senior Momo Kikuchi has qualified for the girls golf state championship. The 2019 Suburban Conference Green Division Player of the Year qualified as an individual for this season’s top tournament.

101819_34732_3.jpgCoach David Gross said she is a phenomenally focused player who has gotten better every year.

“She's got a real shot of winning the thing,” he said. “She practices every day no matter what; in the rain, in the cold and even in the heat.”

She’s been on the golf course all week working to improve her game.

“I've just been practicing on my shorter putts, and hopefully I'll tighten some things up,” she said. “I'm hitting it pretty consistently so I like that.”

Kikuchi will travel to Bolivar on Saturday to play a practice round at the site of the championship.

Gross has watched her grow and take something that is her life beyond school, but this is the end for Kikuchi who has placed near the Top 10 in the state the past 3 years.

“It’s going to be terrible to see her go because she’s a great leader for this team,” Gross said. “She’s a fantastic student, but after 2:30 p.m. for her, it’s about practice and it’s about getting better.”

She tees off at Silo Ridge Golf and Country Club in Bolivar on Monday to begin the 2-day tournament.

"It's really exciting to compete in the postseason against girls I've played with since we were itty bitty," Kikuchi said. "I'm looking forward to getting out there."
