Drummond Elementary School hosted a major author event for approximately 1,000 students in third through fifth grades from Bridgeway, Drummond, Parkwood and Willow Brook elementary schools. Twenty-two award-winning, bestselling middle-grade authors took part in the OMG Book Festival, a celebration of books aimed at readers ages 7 to 12.

Students from the different schools attended one of three sessions. Each started with a pep rally that introduced the authors. Next, students divided into classrooms with authors to create a story or participate in other story-related activities. The sessions concluded with students choosing a book to keep for free and getting it signed by the book’s author.

“Our mission (in hosting the festival) is to spark a lifelong love of reading in every student,” said Drummond library technology specialist Tammi Buckner and instructional specialist Angie Huesgen.

Authors and illustrators visiting Drummond included: Tracey Baptiste, Max Brallier, Michael Buckley, Julia DeVillers, Angela Dominguez, Marcus Emerson, Elizabeth Eulberg, Stuart Gibbs, Karina Glaser, Adele Griffin, Vashti Harrison, Gordon Korman, Kekla Magoon, Sarah Mlynowski, Eliot Schrefer, Courtney Scheinmel, Liesl Shurtliff, Ronald Smith, T.R. Simon, Christina Soontornvat, Tui Sutherland and Booki Vivat.

The festival was sponsored by the Novel Neighbor bookstore. The private event at Drummond was part of a series of events in St. Louis celebrating books. Other activities included “The Author Circus,” a public event at the Ladue Fifth Grade Center, and a special educator and librarian event to allow authors to meet the people who are essential in the mission of connecting children with books. Several Pattonville educators attended this event as well.
