Rose Acres hosts business leaders during leadership day

Leadership is embedded in the daily life of Rose Acres Elementary School, so it was only natural for the school to host a meeting of more than 25 business leaders from the St. Louis region. During Rose Acres' annual Leadership Day, the school hosted the annual Board of Directors meeting for the Junior Achievement (JA) of Greater St. Louis and welcomed JA board members, staff and volunteers into their classes for lessons and leadership time.

Rose Acres students demonstrated their leadership skills by greeting the business guests upon arrival and escorting them to their initial meeting room, making announcements over the intercom and escorting visitors to classrooms, where several visitors provided JA lessons to students. Third-graders Kristopher Farfan and Kady Ohlsen gave welcoming remarks during the JA board meeting. Students also shared their leadership binders with their guests and welcomed visitors to participate in DEAL (Drop Everything And Lead) time with their crew members. Once a month, students and staff at Rose Acres spend time in action teams (called crews) during DEAL time, where they participate in leadership activities geared toward improving the life of their school.

JA senior program manager Katie Pagano nominated Rose Acres to host the board meeting and visit.

"It was easy. Pattonville elementary schools have partnered with JA of Greater St. Louis for at least 5-plus years to bring JA programs, in the hands of business and college student volunteers, to their students," she said. The board member school visits are structured with a meeting first and JA lessons in the classroom second for an important purpose.
"JA of Greater of St. Louis wants our board members to experience first-hand the educators and students that they are supporting, and what better way than to serve as a JA classroom volunteers and … be treated to students who speak directly to the board members during their meeting, students who make preparations for an eye-opening experience (students created placements for breakfast and lunch showing favorite area businesses) and escorting board members to their classrooms."

Rose Acres is in its sixth year of being a Leader in Me school. The program is based on Stephen Covey’s “Seven Habits of Highly Effective People” and teaches leadership and life skills to students while creating a culture of student empowerment based on the idea that every child can be a leader.

JA of Greater St. Louis is part of a national organization that provides programming for students in the areas of work readiness, entrepreneurship and financial literacy. JA's programs help students in kindergarten through 12th grade understand how to manage money, explore what it means to start a business and be better prepared for the future of work.

Rose Acres Elementary School students welcome business leaders to their school.

Junior Achievement board members, staff and volunteers spent time in the classrooms providing JA lessons.
