Our garden story for 2016 begins with 18 yards of black gold compost delivered in early winter

IMG_1112.jpg
We had cover crops growing on three quadrants.  Two of annual ryegrass and one of winter rye and we were still harvesting kale and chard well into winter

Paul Berglund works on ending the cat5 cables we buried during the sprinkler installation

IMG_1258.jpg
Paul and two Pattonville high school students Nathan Skelton and Josh Zahner solder on moisture sensors to connect to the TSA Garden Pi sprinkler controller project

IMG_1266.jpg
Each quadrants moisture will be monitored by a sensor in the soil to help guide the use of the sprinklers

IMG_1267.jpg
Nathan and Josh also help the Early Childhood children at the Learning Center to fill trays with potting soil and plant cruciferous vegetable seeds for the garden

IMG_1275.jpg
Within just 4 days the seeds sprout and begin to grow

IMG_1316.jpg
Two weeks later the seedlings are ready to plant

IMG_1320.jpg
The two quadrants with annual ryegrass are topped with compost and tilled and last years kale quadrant is cleared, tilled, and seeded with annual ryegrass till tomatoes and peppers are ready to plant in May

IMG_1322.jpg
The rows are shaped and the seedlings are planted before the first spring rain

IMG_1328.jpg
Scott's Power Equipment donates a roll of hay they use for displaying the holding ability of their equipment and we will use to mulch the garden and supress weeds
