Two students earn spots in Missouri Geography Bee

Two Pattonville students were among 100 statewide recognized by the National Geographic Society as semifinalists eligible to compete in the 2014 Missouri State Geographic Bee, sponsored by Google and Plum Creek. Joseph Bequette, an eighth-grader at Holman Middle School, and Alex Newett, a seventh-grader at Pattonville Heights Middle School were among those competing in this second level of the National Geographic Bee competition, which is now in its 26th year.

Pattonville superintendent Dr. Michael Fulton has been selected by the Missouri Association of School Administrators (MASA) as the recipient of its annual Robert L. Pearce Award for 2014. Fulton was selected by a committee of his peers. Seven MASA districts nominated a superintendent for the award.The award is given annually to an outstanding Missouri superintendent of schools and includes a $500 cash award to the recipient and a $500 scholarship for a student in the district of the award winner.

Voters in the Pattonville School District elected three volunteers to serve on the school board during the April 8 election. Earning the most votes were Andrea Glenn and incumbents Cindy Candler and Tami Hohenstein, according to unofficial election results from the St. Louis County Board of Election. Winning candidates are sworn into office during an April board meeting and serve three-year terms. Andrew Ostrowski was the fourth candidate on the election ballot. Two Pattonville High School senior have been selected as “Honorable Mention” students in the 2014 Missouri Scholars 100, a statewide program that honors 100 of Missouri’s top academic students in the graduating Class of 2014. Earning the honor are Catherine Breakfield and Danielle Siegel.

The snow day used on Monday, March 3, marked Pattonville’s seventh snow day - one beyond the six days that were already built into the 2013-2014 school year calendar. The district will make up the extra day by having school on Friday, April 18, which had originally been scheduled as a spring holiday, but also as a possible make-up day.

More than 200 students, staff and community members are taking part in a district-wide head shaving event at Holman Middle School from 11 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. on Saturday, March 15, to raise funds and awareness for childhood cancer research through the St. Baldrick's Foundation. All nine schools and the Pattonville Learning Center have raised over $67,000 to date by taking pledges for having their hair cut or heads shaved. The entire community is invited to attend the event, which will also feature food trucks and live music. It's been 40 years since some of them have taken the stage. But on March 14, more than 100 alumni of Pattonville High School's award-winning varsity drill team will return to their alma mater to participate in the school's 40th annual drill team variety show.

PHS senior among 1 percent nationwide to earn finalist status

Pattonville High School senior Selamawit Mulugeta was named a finalist in the National Merit Achievement Scholarship Competition. The National Achievement Scholarship Program is an academic competition that recognizes outstanding black American high school students. Students are selected for recognition after taking the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT) and meeting other published requirements. Only about 1,300 (less than 1 percent) of the more than 160,000 students who enter the National Achievement program earn finalist status. Once achieving this level of recognition, students are eligible to be considered for a National Achievement Scholarship.
