| Pattonville seeks senior adult volunteers for tutoring program |

The Pattonville School District is looking for older adults to volunteer their time with the district's intergenerational tutoring program. After training, volunteers are matched with kindergarten, first- and second-graders at Pattonville's elementary schools. Each volunteer spends about 40 minutes once a week working one-on-one with a child on reading and language skills.

1990 Pattonville High School graduate Debbie (Steudeman) Stieferman will be featured on the Food Network later this fall. Stieferman owns Gooey Louie, a St. Louis bakery that makes homemade gooey butter cakes with a variety of toppings and flavors (including the original). Her company will be featured on the Food Network with a coffeehouse in Lafayette Square as they compete to determine who makes the best gooey butter cake in St. Louis.

| Drummond principal named among NCI's 30 Leaders |

Jason Van Beers, principal of Drummond Elementary School, is among those being honored this year in the 30 Leaders in Their 30s Award program by North County Inc. The award recognizes North County leaders in their 30s who are making a significant positive impact on the North County community through their profession and/or community involvement. Van Beers will be honored at a future North County Inc. reception.

Pattonville High School junior Mikala McGhee will be featured in the MTV reality show “MADE” during an episode that will air at 4 p.m., Monday, Aug. 16. “MADE” is a show that helps teens reach their dreams by pairing them with coaches who help them along the way. Mikala is a student athlete who dreamed of being a ballroom dancer. While she was helping the Pattonville varsity girls soccer team take second place in the state last spring, she was also training with her “MADE” dance coach. She realized her dream of being a ballroom dancer on May
22 when she performed with a partner in a school-sponsored talent show.

| Pirate football players kick off year with mother/son practice |

Pattonville High School's football team is making its upcoming gridiron season a family affair. For the first time ever, the team will host a mother/son pratice and barbecue on Saturday, Aug. 14. Moms will go through drills, learn plays and have fun being part of the team during the 10 a.m. practice. A barbecue will follow at noon. Varsity football coach Steve Smith said the event is designed to get parents more involved in the football program.

For students entering middle school and high school for the first time, Aug. 11 is an important date. On this day, Pattonville's two middle schools and Pattonville High School will host transitional activities geared toward helping students become acclimated to and excited about their new school environments. | Missouri's Back to School Tax Holiday set for Aug. 6-8 |

The state of Missouri will observe its annual sales-tax holiday Aug. 6 through 8. During this time period, certain back-to-school purchases, such as clothing, school supplies and computers, will be exempt from state sales tax. Eligible purchases may also be exempt from sales tax in some cities and counties that have also chosen to participate in the optional holiday. | Second PHS National Merit Scholar named |

The National Merit Scholarship Corporation recently announced that Pattonville High School senior Megan LaFollette is the winner of the National Merit Truman State University Scholarship. She is one of two National Merit Scholarship winners this year from Pattonville. Earlier this spring, Joe Wingerter was among the first group of winners of corporate-sponsored scholarships. He won the National Merit Boeing Scholarship. National Merit winners are named from among students who score in the top half of one percent in the country on the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship
