Principals are often willing to go to great lengths to help students learn. For Bridgeway Elementary School Principal Dr. Bill Casner, that meant getting duct-taped to the gym wall by his students and staff.

It was all part of a project-based learning (PBL) unit for the four first-grade classes at the school. The unit combined lessons on social studies, economics, persuasive writing, multimedia presentations and math to solve the following problem: “How can we create a plan to get and take care of recess equipment?”

Teachers kicked off the project by showing a video about recess games and having the students brainstorm a list of “need to know” questions necessary for completing the project, questions such as “What do we need?” and “Who do we need to help us?” The first-graders furthered their background knowledge by taking part in a literacy station where they visited stations that provided important information, such as a catalogue full of recess equipment, books centered on economics concepts such as need vs. wants and examples of friendly, persuasive letters. Student teams then brainstormed what equipment they needed, where and how it would be used and stored and how to raise funds for it. They presented their ideas before a distinguished panel that included Bridgeton Mayor Terry Briggs, Pattonville Director of School-Business Partnerships Patty Gould, Bridgeway PTO Vice President Jackie Wasser and Dr. Casner. The panel asked questions and helped select the project they deemed most applicable.

At the end of the unit, the classes ultimately decided to conduct a school-wide fund-raiser that involved duct-taping the principal to the wall during an assembly, and Casner was up to the challenge. Flyers and commercials were created and students donated dollar pledges towards each piece of tape. Students and staff raised more than $450 for the cause.
